Challenge

A large motorcycle portal needed two established native applications to keep shipping features and meeting current platform requirements without losing the extensive business behavior accumulated in their Java and Objective-C foundations.

My Role & Ownership

I develop and maintain both applications, delivering user-facing features and releases while progressively modernizing architecture, UI, integrations, shared libraries, naming, build tooling, and older Java and Objective-C code.

Delivery & Engineering

  • Maintained broad product areas including articles, travelogues, videos, forums, messaging, profiles, garages, marketplace listings, companies, events, rides, routes, diaries, refueling, jobs, maps, and rider POIs.
  • Migrated Android features incrementally from Java to Kotlin and coroutines, modernized GPS background logging, strengthened typed parameter and API patterns, and updated Material and AndroidX behavior.
  • Evolved the iPhone and iPad application from Objective-C foundations into a larger Swift 5 codebase while updating navigation, reusable UI, forms, refresh behavior, maps, and current iOS compatibility.
  • Implemented promotional-banner systems across both apps with platform-specific lifecycle, pagination, loading, retry, dynamic sizing, and placement behavior.
  • Integrated Firebase messaging, analytics and crash reporting, Google Maps and location services, REST APIs, media and image pipelines, local data, payments, and account workflows.
  • Added Android Media3 video playback and Google Cast support, new iOS POI creation, automatic What’s New presentation, dependency updates, and continuing store-release maintenance.

Result

Both native apps remain active production products. Continued releases combine new customer-facing capabilities with systematic modernization and reduced legacy-code friction.

Highlights

One motorcycle product delivered independently on Android, iPhone, and iPad.
Two engagement periods: iOS delivery from 2017–2020 and cross-platform stewardship since 2024.
Modernization is performed incrementally around a large, actively used feature surface.
The parent overview connects the cross-platform product with dedicated Android and iOS project pages.
